mvp Pretty hard to not agree with your sentiments, and I applaud them. I feel the same way. Let’s take smoking for example. They banned all adverts, including Formula One (which was probably the largest revenue stream in terms of advertising), placed cigarettes and other tobacco products behind hidden screens, changed packet design etc to include horrible images….. Yes, we know the reasons why, and it would be stupid to not agree with these.
However, alcohol is still widely advertised, made easily accessible thanks to cheap prices in supermarkets, and touted as a social norm - which it is, given today’s society. What they do not tackle is the long term addiction and abuse of such a substance. Sure, we have the “drink responsibly” campaigns, but consider how the health system is being overloaded by those who land up forming a habit they can’t possibly break. Not to mention the long-term side effects of everything outside of health once the dependency starts - not limited to family and relationship breakdowns, loss of job etc.
Then, there’s gambling. I personally think this is one of the worst vices out there. Like alcohol, it destroys families, relationships, normal life, finances, and so much more. Yet, there are adverts on TV constantly for online casinos, realtime gambling on TV in the early hours - it’s almost as though we are being encouraged to gamble, which just isn’t on.
My point here is that if you can take the stance you took with smoking because of the damage it causes long term to health etc, then you should apply that same ideology across the board. Not wanting to be a “party pooper”, but you can’t realistically have constraints for one vice and not another.
My two cents…
